One of our largest community activities is the Molalla Buckeroo, Seventh Largest Rodeo in America ranked by the number of contestants that participate. This huge event always over the fourth of July creates the centerpiece of community activity, Bar-B-Ques, parades, carnivals, trail rides, dances, community parties, and the Grand Pro Rodeo. The Community event began in 1913, a celebration of the access to rail, the recognition of the incorporation of the City Government, our first news paper, and Telephone service.
Later the local fire department used the event as a fund raiser for fire protection equipment, and a municipal water system. The date was moved to the fourth of July, to allow for good weather, a community celebration, the better to entertain the folks visiting at Wilhoit Springs.
The Event eventually became a big time national event produced by local businessmen and community boosters. Check out the Rodeo Walk of Fame on Molalla Ave, Main Street, and at the Rodeo Grounds. On bright bronze tabloes, “heroes” of Rodeo are memorialized for their contribution to the sport of Rodeo. Cowboys, Producers, and livestock are equally depicted.
Many other seasonal events take place, Christmas Tree lighting Ceremony, Trick or Treat Down Town, the Sasquatch Migration, The Farmers Market, Fishing derbies, Best Buck, car shows, dog shows, dog races, Jr. Rodeos, Latino Rodeos, Saloon Roundups, Charity Auctions, Brew Fests, and much, much more. Our BMX track is an elite facility, we are kind of proud of it too.
After the man made activities we should not forget the designs of our creator, for he made the Cascade Mountains. Within a short drive of town, we are proud of the Molalla River Corridor, with access to fishing, hunting camping, hiking, running trails, swimming, back packing, and horse packing, Mountain lakes, ridge top trails, and three wondrous mountain tops. Table Rock, Rooster Rock and Peachuck Lookout access from the river gorge. Rhody Lake, and Lookout Mountain are accessible from the corridor, or Sawtell road.
